Crunch Time for Cookies
"A cookie is a piece of information in the form of a very small text file that is placed on an internet user's hard drive. It is generated by a web page server, which is basically the computer that operates a web site. The information the cookie contains is set by the server and it can be used by that server whenever the user visits the site. A cookie can be thought of as an internet user's identification card, which tell a web site when the user has returned." www.aboutcookies.org
Google uses cookies to inform it's analytics, ecommerce sites use them to track customers carts and purchases. They can be used in many different ways, some good, some not so... The Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) (Amendment) Regulations 2011 (UK Regulations) now tell us that web visitors must be given, firstly information about any cookies used and secondly the opportunity to give their consent to their use in respect of their browsing. This may well mean a stand alone policy as opposed to covering cookie use within your website general use and privacy policies. We've found a good site that explains the new regulations.
