A small start, a smart start - being part of global change

by Tom Bradbury, in BIG Business

I've been on one of my annual family-related trips to China for the past couple of months and continue to be impressed by the economy and efficiency of the Chinese culture. Far from the wasteful trends of the Western world here are just a few examples:

  • it's 15 degrees C in the house; no heating needed... wear a few extra layers
  • kettle only boiled once or twice a day; fill up giant thermos flasks and they last all day long for hot drinks / cooking etc.
  • hot water only turned on for showering; we can handle occasionally chilly hands when washing up
  • waste water from showers used to water plants
  • extremely rarely is food thrown away left to go to waste

All these are small things admittedly but are quite commonplace here and, rather interesting, given many people in the West generally need some 'gentle' persuasion (government tax?) to do the same sorts of things it’s something to think about.

… and before you say it – I’m not living in a poor, backward, rural environment, I'm currently in a modern, beautifully clean city of 9 million people. Anyway, talking of waste it’s time I got back to work...

Being creative about how to approach and use ideas and materials is a big part of how we do business; smart ideas saving waste, cutting costs and promoting a lighter carbon footprint. With Earth Hour just around the corner we all can play a small part in a global movement and help change the way we all see the world and protect our planet.

Join us and be part of the largest voluntary action ever witnessed.
