CMS, HMS, OHMS, IT gobbledy gook, cobblers and multi-bypass whatsimithingies...

by Simon Bolstridge, in Web design & development

Time to panic? I think not...Life can be going along so nice and easy - and then you get to your brand new shiny website...  You're ever so proud of it: after all, it's your business' gateway to the world, the place where you get to shout about how you can help the world doing what you do in a fabulous way for each and every business/ person out there.

And then, the inevitable happens, (cue: "Jaws" music) you have a new service available; you simply need to update your website, "Aaaaaargh!". Quick, call the marketing guys, the designer, the web guys...  They'll take how long?!

So let's rewind a bit.  What if you could quite simply go to a particular section and  press a button to add a new web page? Then, how about making updates to your site in realtime?  Correcting speelling [sic] mistakes easily by just typing in your corrections and making it live with the click of a button and you could find that button without cold sweats?

"Too good to be true!", I hear cried from the back of the room.  Not so, I reply.

Here at BIG, we've been working on an online Content Management System (a CMS no less) to enable you to quickly, yet powerfully, update your website with the minimal amount of training and the most user friendly of administration areas ("Oh no! An administration area!?" - Stop panicking... this is simply a name given to an online area attached to your website where you, as the owner and unseen by the viewing public, can securely login and update/ amend your website in peace, quiet and tranquility).

To start with, once we've sorted your website using our part of the CMS, we'll provide you with your login web address  - we're even kind enough to provide you with a username and password ("The gifts just keep on coming..."). We'll show you how to login and help you around for your first time - just to make sure that there's nothing in there to scare you off.

Then, there's the update facility thingy-ma-bob...

Once you've logged in, simply go back to your website and look around it like you normally would if you were a visitor to the site. Something to update? Simply double click on it... up comes an editable block similar in look to Microsoft Word. Type away, put in images as you wish, create third party links and/or links to other pages on your site (by using drop downs, no typing!) then press the lovely "floppy disc" save button.

"Ok. So now what do I do?"

Not a thing/ nada/ zilch: that's it - you're done. It's now time to grab that coffee, sit back then let everybody else think you're still working on the website. Now where's that copy of Gardener's World...
