Keep It Simple Stupid ...

by Gareth Buddo, in Photography

It should be natural that a professional does the best job they can, after all it may make all the difference between themselves and their competitors.

In doing so it can be all too easy to fall into formulaic methods of working, however sophisticated and complicate the performance enhancing qualities.

Using supplementary lighting, even in a natural light environment, is a marvellous way of creating powerful images for our clients; however, over the last couple of months I’ve been experimenting with natural or ‘found’ light in my personal work.

Looking for places around the house where the light naturally directs, reflects, or falls away, I’ve used light from iPhones and laptops with near cinematic effects, letting the model direct their own lighting.

How novel! No flashes, no stands, no remote triggers, diffusing brollies, spot grids, dishes, barn doors, deflectors, reflectors, refractors…

The message to myself? Sometimes you’ve just got to keep it simple. Simple can be beautiful.
